OC Teacher Arrested for Having Sex With Student

You can find the full story here on the OC Register's site.  The allegations are that this teacher, age 48, has had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 17 year old student.  By law, a person has to be 18 years old to legally consent to sex so he was hauled off to jail.

So, lets say this student was indeed 18 years old.  Suddenly it becomes legal for her Spanish teacher to have sex with her, but does that make it okay?  Does the school condone such things?  How do the other students feel (or this guy's wife if he has one).  

I personally would not want my children being taught by a teacher that was sexually involved with one of their classmates.  This guy is 31 years older than the girl.  Something is not right here even if it were legal (which it is not).

Well this is an interesting mug shot...maybe he's really short.   Sharing story after story like this is very depressing, but a comment left today spurs me on.  This blog does have value and as ugly as it is to know how many predators lurk in Orange County, CA, we need to know.

"The victim, who is under 18, told police she met Silberman on Thursday when he was substitute teaching at Savanna High School in Anaheim, Martinez said. The victim told police that Silberman had "sexual contact" with her.
Silberman is being held at the Anaheim Detention Facility on suspicion of sexual penetration with a foreign object and child annoyance, Martinez said. Silberman is expected to appear in court for an arraignment hearing later this week"

Bad, Bad Teachers - a new link on my sidebar

A friend sent me a link to a site she found and I've added it here.  The title of the site says it all but here is how they describe themselves:

As you probably guessed from the name of this site, its focus is upon educators accused of behaving badly and in various and sundry ways, usually criminal in nature.
Hardly a day goes by that the news media is not reporting on yet another teacher school employee run amok and often students are victimized in the process.
This site exists not to glorify bad behavior but rather to shed light upon a serious problem and one which appears to be getting worse with each passing month and year.

Its the same reason I have this blog - a place to talk about the ugliness of sexual crimes and abuse.  Its intent is to educate, warn and bring awareness to this growing problem.

My heart hurts when I read this happening over and over....

I'll let you read the article if you want details. Two things about this infuriate, disgust and worry me:

1. Our children are not safe at school. This guy is a child predator. You may argue that the girls were old enough to know what they are doing. 17 year old girls are not adults and not mature enough to always make good decisions. I can guarantee this guy charmed and flirted to get what he wanted. He KNEW that these girls were underage. He did it twice. He would have kept doing it if someone had not stopped him. He is 26 years old, don't tell me that there aren't plenty of woman over 18 for him to date (hopefully over 21).

2. His sentence was bullcrap! I know that judge from sitting in his court for 48 hours over the last few months and he was wrong to let this guy off so easy. I'm very disappointed.

A former dance instructor accused of allegedly recording young female students with a hidden camera in his bathroom and sexually assaulting a girl is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.
Authorities say 28-year-old Jason Alan Marian, a former part-time instructor at the Mission Viejo Dance & Performing Arts Center in Laguna Niguel, allegedly recorded female students in the bathroom of his Aliso Viejo home after inviting them to change their clothes.
An investigation began when a girl found the camera hidden in Marian's bathroom on April 14, officials said. The girl took the camera and gave it to her father, who in turn handed it over to authorities.
The 10- to 14-year-old dance students were over at Marian's house during parties that were hosted by him and his wife, who was also an instructor at the school.
Another student at the dance school also told officials that Marian took her out for drinks in Dana Point in June 2006, took her to his home and sexually assaulted her.
Marian was arrested May 15 and faces five counts of possession and control of child pornography, two counts of sexual penetration of a minor using a foreign object and two counts of oral copulation with a minor.
He was released after posting $100,000 bond.
Marian, the only male instructor at the dance studio, was hired at the dance studio after passing a routine background check in October 2004.
He and his wife, also an instructor at the studio, were fired after the owner of the studio found out about the allegations.
Marian is scheduled to appear at Harbor Justice Center at 8:30 a.m.
