This did not have to happen, it did not have to go on for YEARS. This makes me ill.
The victim testified that Carrera – a family friend – started molesting her when she was about 4 and he began living in her parents' home. The sexual contact continued until she was 13, when her family moved out of Orange County in 2003.
After she turned 15, the family returned to Orange County and she began working at a pizza restaurant managed by Carrera, according to her testimony.
Molestation victims sometimes return to their abusers, sometimes out of a feeling of helplessness or what experts call "accommodation syndrome," according to Deputy District Attorney Robert Mestman.
The girl testified that on April 25, 2006 – after she had been working at the pizza restaurant for about three months – Carrera cornered her alone after sending all other employees home, reminded her of their earlier sexual contact, and raped her.
She told the jury that she did not struggle because she felt intimidated and scared. She also testified that Carrera threatened to hurt her and her family if she told anyone about the sexual episodes.
